A look at what could be a ( real ) House of the Future

A little non-Disney video to end this week-end. After the two recent articles on Disneyland's House of the Future, i found this video showing the finalists of the Electrolux Design Lab 2009.

Great design and great ideas, it would be great if these products were released for real in the future! Have a look at the video below! More infos available on their site HERE.

Imagineering video reveal WDI new technologies

Two days ago Disney Parks released the video below - a (well-deserved) tribute to Walt Disney Imagineering. The date of the release is interesting as it was two weeks before the opening of the D23 Expo where guests will be able to see "new technologies being developed by Walt Disney Imagineering".

And precisely, this new video shows us - even if it is very brief shots - what seems to be some WDI new technologies we never saw before. We're going to have a closer look at them but before, if you have not watch the video yet, have a look at it below, if you did previously, jump after the video.

So, the first interesting shot is at 0:19 with fountains on fire. It's quite spectacular and i won't be surprised if we see it next year in the World of Color show at DCA.

Next interesting shot is at 0:45 where we see an Imagineer in front of Master Gracey's portrait which changes when the Imagineer waves his hand. Who is ready to take the bets that this technology will be coming to the Haunted Mansion anytime soon?

More intriguing at 1:14 are these two Imagineers animating a Jack Sparrow character thanks to motion capture technology. An interactive experience is supposedly coming to the Disney Cruise Line, but may be we'll see this somewhere else.

At 1:52 the face behind the Imagineer looks really A LOT like Yoda's face. Will we see a Yoda AA in the new and awaited Star Tours 2.0 attraction?

At 2:17 a man is walking in what seems to be Narnia's Ice Queen throne and he is interacting with projected characters including Tinker Bell. The WDWnewstoday site think that it may be "an experience where guests would be able to enter environments and interact with “real” characters via RFID technology". We'll see...

And finally at 2:22, we can see a spinning simulator vehicle with mounted guns. Anyone have an idea of where this will appear?

As i've said the release date of this video two weeks before the D23 Expo looks like a viral campaign for the Expo. There is little doubt that they knew that Disney fans will notice these shots, and considering that WDI Imagineers will be at D23 Expo, i count on those of you who will attend the event to ask them more details about these amazing new technologies. Don't forget to let us know!

John Lasseter Q&A videos series - Part two

It's a special "John Lasseter Q&A videos" today. First, yesterday, the Disney Living channel released this first video of John Lasseter talking about the upcoming "ultimate" Toy Story toys. This new toys will be great and i can't wait to see tne next videos with John probably introducing each of them. Have a look to this first video, next one should be post next week.

The Q&A short videos series is going on on the Pixar channel, and John Lasseter is answering to interesting questions as you will see in the videos below.

In this first video John Lasseter answers to the question "When will we see a female lead?" in an animated picture, and John reveal that there is one coming soon in an upcoming Pixar movie!

Did you ever wonder if "the Pixar lamp is a mama lamp, or a daddy?". John will give you the answer in the video below!

Somebody else asked John an interesting question: "What Does A113 Mean?". Have a look at the video to get the answer to this apparently strange question!

The next question to John Lasseter is just as strange and it's "Do You Like Monkeys?". As you will see John is not alone this time to answer the question!

In this last video, Lasseter explain "who wrote the story of UP!"

New videos are posted regularly on the PIxar channel, so have a look at Pixar's page on Facebook or Daily Motion. And enjoy!

Disneyland's House of the Future - Part Two

A good friend and faithful Disney and more reader sent to me recently this rare article that he found in an old issue of Popular Science Magazine.

And it's a very interesting one. Not only because it talks of the Monsanto House of the Future, but because the date of the article is April 1956! And so, you ask? Well, you see, Disneyland's House of the Future was not open in 1956. In fact, it opened in 1957, one year later!

Which means what? On the cover of this April 1956 issue, the title was "1956 Home Show" and the article was called "Plastic House of the Future" and not the "House of the Future". The good question of course is: Did Walt learned about the Monsanto's house thanks to the article or did he knew about it before? We'll probably never have the answer, but the article is fascinating. Have a look and don't miss the page with the plan of the House of the Future!

A while ago i've found the image below. This one is not related to the House of the Future, but it's from the same era and the picture - which show another kind of "house of the future" is pretty cool, so i add it here. Double-click on it to see it in big size.

DLP Walt Disney Studios Update : Goodbye Backlot Express, Hello Blockbuster Cafe

Hello everyone. I was at DLP this week-end, especially at the Walt Disney Studios and i'm sorry to say that i don't have good news. In fact, i came back home in pretty bad mood, and i'm going to explain you why.

When the WDS opened seven years ago, guests had the choice between three restaurants. The first one is located in the Studio 1 and basically is a fast-food, the second one is "Au Rendez-vous des Stars" with an art-deco style and is a self-service. And the third one was the Backlot Express Restaurant, also a self-service but the best themed of all three.

In fact as you will see below the Backlot Express theme was a "movie props warehouse" and imagineers found hundreds of props - small or large - and spent obviously a lot of time to put them all over the restaurant, and everything was done very intelligently. In two words, the theming was great and it works perfectly with the park's theme, which is supposed to be, let's not forget it, movie studios. It was by far the best themed restaurant at the WDS.

Recently for unknown reasons DLP's management decided to change not only the decor or the theme of the Backlot Express but also its name. Gone is the Backlot Express, the new name is the "Blockbuster Cafe". The entrance is themed on High School Musical - what a blockbuster! - and the room on the left is themed on Pirates of Caribbean movies.

And it's a disaster. Really. I don't like to be harsh and i'm sure they spent some time doing this new deco, but honestly, frankly, they've screwed everything. It was better before and it's very bad now, there is no soul, no genius, nothing.

Let me show you first how it looked before. On the top, a picture of the old facade.

And below some shots of the previous decor with hundreds of props everywhere.

You really had the feeling to be in a movie studios props warehouse and that was great.

And now here is the new decor of the Blockbuster Cafe. First, the exterior. They've simply changed the name on the front and put Pirates of Caribbean posters on the left of the entrance.

Pictures of the main room where all props have disappeared. Instead, plenty of HSM banners all around.

The room on the left have a Pirates of Caribbean theme. Pictures on the wall are huge - and flat - pictures of pirates ship (from the movies). The light is voluntarily darker even a bit "blue" thanks to blue film they put on the windows, and chandeliers hang from the ceiling all around.

In a corner, some POTC props - supposedly coming from the movies, but i wouldn't bet on that.

Because i tried to shoot the pictures on the best angles, perhaps you'll think that this POTC room don't look that bad, but frankly when you're inside it, it's cheap. It's not the worst, but it could have been so much better. You can feel that no big budget was available for all these new decors. And it's a pity because the previous Backlot Express decor had inspiration. The worst is that this new Blockbuster Cafe may be successful! Regular guests are less difficult than we can be and considering that HSM and POTC are very popular, the Blockbuster Cafe may become popular too! Let's hope i will have better news from the WDS next time!

A closer look to the IPhone Toy Story Mania game - Demo video

Hello everybody, hope you had a great week-end. Today, we'll have a closer look to the new Toy Story Mania application for the IPhone, thanks to a home-made video.

If you don't own (yet) an IPhone don't go away as it is the first mobile phone application directly inspired by a Disney attraction! I must say that i have been pretty disappointed by the others previous app released by Disney for the IPhone, but this one is good. Its price on the App Store is $4.99 or 3.99€ if you buy it on a european Itunes Store.

Thanks to five different "midway" games and even some little pop-up effects, they succeed to keep the look if not the "spirit" of the DCA and DHS attraction.

Before you begin each game a little tutorial teels you what kind of gestures you have to do on the multi-touch IPhone screen, and it's different one for each game.

Here is the App description from the ITunes App Store where the game already have a 4 stars rating. Let's be clear: there is many games for the IPhone who are more sophisticated, but in this case it was not the point. The point was to do an App game that looks like the attraction...with the limits, of course, of the Iphone.

Personally i think they did a real good job, and it's time now to have a look at the first video below which will show you briefly the different games. Of course, colours and sounds are better in real.

This second video was not shoot by me but by "AppBankVideo" whom i thanks a lot for the embedding. The video quality is better but it will show you only two games.

Of course there is still the big Toy Story Mania video game yet to be released for the Wii, it'll be next month, and we will talk about it soon. In the meantime, if you own an IPhone, go ahead and download this nice little app, you should not be disappointed.
